Right here right now we have a certain variety of tree that is in bloom. There’s a sickly sweet aroma of the nectar in the air … and my eyes hurt, my sinuses are stuffy and my skin’s itchy. Eventually I usually get a “headache” above and behind my eyes, and mild flu like symptoms.
There’s a massive amount of flowers here because whole trees are covered in flowers, and they’ve come into bloom all at the same time.
Hay fever as I understand it is an allergy to pollen that’s airborne which comes from flowers. Anti-histamines can control the symptoms and offer some relief. Possibly decongestants might help too with the blocked sinuses. Analgesics like paracetamol (Tylenol) might help with pain relief. Although I should add, I’m not a doctor, so ask a medically qualified and certified professional, don’t take my advice.
Rhinitis is as I understand the concept of a problem with one’s sinuses. However hay fever isn’t confined to just sinus issues.
I’m fairly sure that my tolerance to pollen has decreased with age. Not that I’m in old age, but lets just say I’m not as young as I used to be.
There is a theory floating around that living in polluted areas like many cities, could make one more likely to be a hay fever sufferer. I certainly didn’t experience the same kinds of symptoms living in rural areas, mostly my sinuses have suffered from living in towns and cities … and it’s very likely smoking cigarettes doesn’t help matters !
Any hay fever or sinus suffers out there ? What’s your experiences ? What have you found in terms of relief, or perhaps cure ? Are age, or where you live and how polluted it is, are factors ?
Cheers

My allergies are aggravated much more out in the country, than about the city. The one place I had no allergy symptoms and totally clear sinuses, was out at sea. Salt air does wonders, and of course there is no pollen. 😉
Thanks Kevin, I should probably walk more on the beach, get back to what I’m good at 🙂
Likewise. Work has kept me away from the ocean front too long.
Same. Still I guess then doesn’t that make it even more precious when we’re there 🙂
Indeed it does. 🙂
Hi DC. Hope your symptoms ease soon. Pollution does make hay fever worse. People often have little sympathy for sufferers because ‘nobody dies of hay fever’. Not actually true if you sneeze while driving, and close your eyes for a split second… Just one thing, rhinitis refers to inflammation of the nose, not the sinuses.
Hey Carol, nice to hear from you … thanks for clarifying on rhinitis … not sure if it’s inflammation of nose or sinus or both actually … I only made the hay fever connection because a friend described his symptoms, and realised they were the same symptoms I had.
grannyK said, the worst part is the headaches, the rest is tiresome but liveable with. I downgraded from stronger pain killers to paracetamol, because I felt stronger ones had some side effects which I didn’t like. I’ll keep them in stock anyway in case I get a fever etc, hopefully not, but better to be prepared.
As for the sympathy, well, that’s life 🙂
🙂 Ouch! That doesn’t sound too good.
Pray for rainy weather – it helps stop the pollen to fly around and that will relieve your situation. Other than that – some meds will help, others will make you drowsy. But it gets better with ages… (in my case it did).
Take care and have a very HAPPY weekend! 🙂
Thanks, and yes I’m OK with it, wondered mostly what others experiences were 🙂
Hay fever and dust allergies popped up a few years back. I have medicine in supply and detest warm dusty days. In certain conditions my nose and throat can get clogged up in slime and snot trying to contain the particles while I struggle to breathe freely.
Even so I have mild allergies. Some people can get severe reactions and need immediate care. Pills do not work for them.
When you need medicine, find the one that has the least harmful side effects and even if expensive get that one. An allergy attack and side effects can be even worse combined.
Thanks 🙂 … seems quite common here in SE Asia … The over the counter anti-histamines and decogestants keep me going, and paracetemol seems to work of for headaches … and yes not really bothered much by allergies in colder climates or when I was “growing up”
In my younger years, I had no allergies. When I hit my 40’s, I started getting them. Now, they are bad all but in winter. If I do yard work, I suffer for a few days after with swollen and red eyes, stuffy nose and sneezing. It’s strange how you change over the years! The headaches are the worst part, I think.
grannyK … that’s about the size of it for me too, didn’t really bother me “growing up” … and yes the congestion is “tiresome”, but liveable with, the headaches are the main issue. I’ve got several antihistamines which are fairly effective, and decongestants, tablets and a spray. I downgraded from stronger pain killers to paracetamol, because it seems to work just as well.
