The humble iPod is said to have launched Apple’s success into a whole ‘nuther level. Originally first released in 2001, the iPod has gone through many different incarnations to the the very slick device of today.
So why call it an “iPod”?
Well the story goes that freelance copywriter Vinnie Chieco, coined the name iPod. After seeing the prototype and inspired by the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, which includes a line – “Open the pod bay door, Hal!”, Vinnie decided on iPod.
It seems that iPod has gone from strength to strength, whilst Vinnie seems to have dwindled into relative insignificance. Long live the iPod !

though according to that story, we should have already sent manned-flights to Jupiter like…12 years ago? scifi-tales certainly fly far…
Haha, yes wouldn’t trust scifi to be be historically correct, but it’s amazing that some of the ideas get taken directly from scifi to market …

I think the iphone is more like the black monolith, the original ipod wasn’t black ?
