I saw this question in the WordPress.com support forums today … no point in posting the link, I reckon the thread will get deleted … however, it is an interesting question …

This is such an interesting topic to brainstorm on! We tell lies I guess cause we….can???😈😂
Seriously though, there’s that pretty lame line we often reel out to justify ourselves! You know, that ‘What you don’t know will not hurt you; ignorance is bliss’, infamous line! But, who are we really kidding?! Once a lie’s told, a vicious circle’s set into motion as more lies are birthed and that can only pan out for sooo long before the dots plain refuse to add up and we slip up! Only then will it dawn on us that we’ve been had! Yikes! 😂😂
The truth is effortless, so much so that we needn’t think ’bout it! Bitter and will make one less popular but what’s popularity to being free and enjoying real lasting peace and tranquility?! A clear conscience that will make one get a goodnight’s sleep?! 😊😄
Thanks for sharing Don, great post! 👍👍
You’re welcome, thanks for sharing too Yemie 🙂
The reason depends on the motivation.
That’s smart Belinda 🙂
Obviously 😉
Of course, you’re no idiot !
Oh contraire my dear Sir- it is ALL I am.

🙂
To save face.
Convenience.
Pride/ego.
Their life is often a lie.
Some reasons I’ve seen too !
In my opinion, lying is actually a act of remorse. You lie, just because you don’t want to get shelling from everyone esle. Hence, lying will actually stabilize the situation by giving the person a false information, eruption of anger and hatred will be prevented.
That’s smart Ivan, I like that one 🙂
Thanks !

Fear and Shame.
Well put 🙂
Politicians lie to get elected, then they lie to get reelected, so they can become part of the permanent political elite. Men and women lie to each other because they believe that’s what their partners want to hear, and that the truth will destroy their relationship. People lie to avoid hurting others’ feelings. We are all bundles of deceit!
Lie, damn lies and statistics 🙂
Ultimately, because of a lack in education on the importance of truthfulness as the foundation of all human virtues–because if you can’t see the truth of who you are, then how can you ever hope to change yourself for the better?
Like it 😉
All people lie, some more than others. Mankind is made up of sinners exclusively. Some believe mankind is innately good. We’re not. We innately sinful. We’re born that way. Just watching children it is readily seen. That’s why we needed a Savior, to forgive our sins and sinfulness.
Interesting to watch the nature channel and see how animals do life with no conception of sin or virtue …
Because they are pathological? They can’t tell the difference between a lie and the truth? To save face? Which is very vain of the person! (Although when one is caught they must have a red face with embarrassment!) I believe in TOTAL honesty! Even if it makes me look bad!
All of the above …
That’s a good question. Uhmmm… It depends on different situations. Sometimes people use it to manipulate others, in other cases it is used not to hurt others and also in order to create fantasy, hope, ilussion for something or someone like papa noel, christmas, in other cultures (spanish culture for example), “el ratoncito perez”, “los tres reyes magos” or olentzero (in basque culture).
Good ‘ol santa claus 🙂
Lying is a weakness, because it represents the easy way out – the truth is often much harsher to deal with. Lying is often avoidance. Lying can buy time. Lying can disguise the truth (but only temporarily). Lying can arise out of insecurity. (Yes, insecurity stems from fear).
Fair point 🙂
Fear is my opinion. We are afraid of everything and will lie to avoid facing the truth for many reasons.
That’s one reason definitely 🙂
~To avoid others from being hurt, when the truth is too painful
Sometimes, yes …
Self-preservation?
For sure, sometimes it is …
