Please Unfollow My Blog

REALLY ? SERIOUSLY ? You wasted both our time by posting a comment on my about page, for that ?

Look I don’t need to know if you unfollowed me, I’m not petty about it, we’re grown ups not kids playing school-yard games. WordPress isn’t a dating site, either !

DonCharisma.org-Couple-Hugging

If you want to unfollow then just do it, I honestly don’t keep track, I don’t keep scores, I bottom line don’t care.

Why ? There are more than 65,000,000 blogs on WordPress, bound to be some others that like me enough to follow me !

MOVING ON … about once a month or so I have a clear out, I do unfollow blogs that are no longer following me, and I do follow back *ALL* bloggers that follow me. All as part of the same process.

The process takes me 3-4 hours, there are one thousand, one hundred and sixty pages of subscribers on my blog, nearly 27,000 followers.

So :

  1. a request to unfollow you – I will only do now during this process, so you’ll just have to wait. Trust that I will do it, sooner or later. I don’t need to know of your request.
  2. *I ALWAYS FOLLOW BLOGGERS BACK*, even if it takes me a while, please be patient – it will happen.

You can assist me in this by keeping your gravatar and settings up to date, this is maintained in three places :

https://wordpress.com/settings/account/

https://en.gravatar.com/profiles/edit/

https://your-blog-name-here.wordpress.com/wp-admin/index.php?page=my-blogs  (set your primary blog correctly)

Keeping your gravatar and settings up to date also has the added benefit that :

  1. it’s easier for a blogger to visit your blog if you comment on theirs, saves them time, which means it’s more likely to happen
  2. you get a free backlink to your blog every time you comment on another blog which help’s your SEO
  3. it’s easier for the blogger who you’ve commented on their blog to see you’re an authentic wordpress user
  4. for busy bloggers like myself, it helps us maintain our subscribers list and do things like follow you back
  5. you can give yourself a pat on the back for being neat and tidy

So please I don’t need to know if you’ve unfollowed me.

BUT do please know I do value those that do follow me, the least I can do is to follow you back, so :

I WILL ALWAYS FOLLOW YOU BACK ON WORDPRESS

Warm regards

Don Charisma

  1. Thank you for this post, I stumbled upon it while searching for others experiences of being asked to unfollow – a request I do not understand at all. Anyways, I appreciate your take on the follow and unfollow-thing 🙂

  2. Please don’t unfollow me, as I have only 2 followers, you and my mom 🙂 actually i only write my blog for me, that anyone chooses to follow me is cool, although i am still fearful of allowing people who know me in everyday life, to know my true everyday thoughts…

    1. Don’t worry about that, I follow everyone who’s following me 🙂

Advice – share what you feel comfortable sharing, nothing more … that’s generally how I do it 🙂

      Warm regards

      Don

    1. LOL, I just assuming that’s an actual quesiton – SEO – Search Engine Optimisation (we use s’es in the UK where yanks use z’s)

Bottom line the original definition was making your website more accessible to Google, so make the website easier for Google to index. Over the years that definition has been added to and bastardised so that it’s become to mean more like “promoting” in the common man’s vocabulary. Sometimes I just give up trying to be accurate in favour of being understood.

I’m doing an intern selection process and their first competitive article will be on SEO, so might be right up your street. I’ll probably release their first article title today, and they’ll have 48 hours to do it, so publishing their entries on mon/tues.

      Cheers

      Don

  3. Good old interweb oddballs. 😀 Someone once told me to “Shutup!” on Twitter once for posting too many cute birds, and loudly let me know that they unfollowed me too for cluttering up their home page. Funny people!

    1. LOL, birds = girls in UK, so cute birds means something different … and yes I’ve had the complainers about cluttering their feed/inbox/whatever … really ? whatever, you waste my time with that nonsense … people are strange !

  4. I do agree that we are adults and it certainly “my choice” who I follow. I will say I’m certainly better off after reading one of your blogs.
Here comes the” but” I don’t want you to follow me because you feel obligated I prefer you follow me because we share a common thought, life event, or just enjoy the writing. I don’t have many followers and that’s o.k. with me, after all I started blogging for a release of my feelings and the animosity it gives me.
I will continue to follow you. But only follow me if you are going to read it… ~
Please keep up the good work I’m one of your biggest fans! ~Liberty

    1. There’s many reasons, they are all pretty petty … if you’re following me I’ll always follow back sooner or later, I do my process about once a month, so please be patient if it’s not immediate … and feel free to follow up 🙂

  5. Joy o joy – I really did enjoy reading that! Made me laugh into my coffee. People are the same on Instagram… Its a whole new complex about who is following who, why who doesn’t follow or like, who is who et cetera et cetera. On-line wars 🙂 Don’t sweat the petty things… or is it don’t pet the sweaty things? 😀

    1. Thanks, and yeah, not interested in the petty stuff, bloggers like that need to find bloggers who like that sort of thing … not on my blog, not on my watch … and good to hear people have a sense of humour out there 🙂

  6. I don’t understand why people would ask that. You write a blog knowing it will be available to the public (unless it is a private blog) if you don’t want people to follow your work why have a public blog at all? The whole idea of it seems rather absurd to me, since I am a new blogger that gets super excited and grateful when I get a new follower. By the way thanks for supporting me, your blog is really cool 🙂

    1. You’re very welcome kate, and I’m a more mature blogger and I get excited about new followers too 🙂

It’s just pettiness plain and simple … “plenty more fish” to borrow from the dating world, even though I said it’s not a dating site ! … there are a massive amount of lovely genuine people out there, so a few fools shouldn’t spoil one’s enjoyment in life 🙂

  7. This whole “follow just so that the other blogger will follow you back and then unfollow”, is just so sneaky, and it happens everywhere !! And that’s one of the reasons I like WP, cause it is more like a community on here… But you know what they say about any BIG group, there are always a few who like being the Kill-joy… Maybe it makes them feel superior or maybe its just a pathetic attempt at attention seeking or whatever… And I cant say I’m too surprised by the petty attitude, these trolls exhibit !! Anyway, I quite love your blog… And the photos are just Breathtaking !!
    Cheers !
    Madhuri

    1. Thanks, very kind of you to say 🙂 … and yes following wait for follow back then unfollow, very devious, not my style … for me the follow is a bit of ping, if we make a connection then great, same either way … I’m always happy to make friend with genuine cool bloggers, don’t care race, religion, age, sex … just polite really and don’t preach or try to get me to support what I’m not congruent or a supporter of, that’s it 🙂

      See you soon

      Don

      1. Haha so true… Some people just dampen the spirit… But I’ve encountered more nice and cool bloggers than the whiney complainers… 😀 anyway, I still LOVE WP and its one of the best decisions I’ve made in the recent past.. 🙂

        Cheers

      2. Agreed … and actually what I’ve found is the worst people to deal with are men … just so rude and blunt, I have no clue how they make any progress socially … may do a post on that !

      3. woah !!! Yeah, don’t even get me started on people being plain rude and justify it by claiming to be “honest” or “real”… After an extremely hideous confrontation at work last evening, I was thinking of writing a post on just that !! People being rude.. Looking forward to your take on it though… 🙂

      4. For sure yes some people will justify being rude with authenticity, but what then about empathy ? … You’ll have to send me links on anything to read hun, I’m way behind on everything, there’s 70 comments in my queue and as quick as I reply more arrive …

  8. Hmmm some people have way too much time on their hands lol, my motto is you don’t need everyone to like what you do, you only need the people who like what you do to love it! Haters can hate, it’s none of my business what they think of me! P.s I’m loving your blog!

    1. LOL, looking forward to seeing your post Laura … there’s been a couple of ladies who’ve added me on FB and then disappointed because I don’t have a ream of photos of myself on there … I’ll leave the rest to your imagination !

      1. I don’t mind hun really doesn’t bother me, it’s when implied pressure is exerted for me to share photos that I don’t want to, that annoys … I’m still the same person you liked on my blog so why would seeing a photo of me make any difference … at the moment I like my privacy, and until I decide different that’s how it’ll be …

  9. I recently tweeted to “Workaholics” that I thought their episode showing them smashing rats to death was in poor taste. I had many responses, some good some bad. The bad ones went so far as to tell me to kill myself, and that they hoped me and anyone close to me got herpes and died. That stuff hurts, no matter how much we try to block it. There is always going to be someone out there trying to tear you down if you fight the good fight. You just can’t let them!

    1. For sure, and to the best of my knowledge I thought herpes was a “minor” infection that doctors don’t worry about too much … I read that something like 1 in 4 americans have it … haters gonna hate, thankfully my experience of wordpress is that it’s fairly chilled and fairly cool people end up here …

    1. Woah, really ? … I’ve always found you to be lovely, so that’s massive in my eyes, lady who’s always polite, lovely smile getting this kind of crap … thanks for sharing hun, and sorry you had that experience … if people don’t want their posts liked then switch off likes altogether … personally I don’t care who likes my posts, I’m happy for any and all 🙂

      1. Ah the plagiarising African … That’s not cool really someone passing his work off as their own … not as yet had such an experience, but I’m not immune, it’s common on internet … nice post hun 🙂

  10. Wow, 27,000 followers? And YOU followed little ol’ me before I followed you? I feel honoured – to be followed by someone like you, and to follow someone who has interesting things to say, not to mention those awesome landscapes! 🙂

    1. LOL, occasionally I blow my own whistle, and yes over time following built up, very happy with the friends and people that are with me … always happy for new connections, we’re all writers and publishers here, little or large doesn’t matter to me … it’s the blogger that makes a blog 🙂

  11. I’m new to WordPress and as always burn too many candles at once. I follow you because struck a chord even before reading this blog. I like its fresh air. Consequently it will take me a very long time to consider unfollowing you. Be patient with me and I will get my blog speeding along. Nice work!

      1. The fact they are insignificant, irrelevant and talentless upsets them so much, they feel a need to attack successful writers.

Best of success for your blog!

  12. The nerve of some people, oh well I guess the world needs variety to keep things interesting.
I once got an email from some guy whom had followed my blog, complaining that I had commented on his blog thanking him for the follow as well as a comment on some images.
Thankfully 99.9% of people in the world are normal genuine souls 🙂

    1. For sure, I think sometimes people don’t really understand or new, in which case a little leeway … but only if that person has the humility to admit they are wrong and back down … otherwise, well they’ll never learn anything …

      Cheers

      Don

  13. Well, you won’t get that comment from me because I enjoy you and your blog. It always gives me a smile. I’ve loved watching people do your paint prompt. Very clever.

  14. Oh…wow! I can’t believe someone actually had the NERVE to post that they didn’t want you to follow them? Rude!
However, it IS good to get these tips. Very useful and helpful for me since I’m a newbie blogger, even if I still don’t understand half of it. Thank you very much CHARISMA! 😉

  15. I asked someone who always seems to have a good and kind heart and head, am I mean if I unfollow someone? Will they know. this person verbalized several grins and pats on the back and said, no notification is sent if you unfollow someone. it’s okay. It happens. Sometimes a blog you followed because they followed you turns out to be something you totally are at odds with (ie., someone who thinks being cruel to animals is a kick or, they comment on your page with mean/inappropriate comments. In other words, it’s okay and don’t worry. You can always follow again. So I feel better about clicking unfollow. One blogger I followed seemed to use the Fword in every other sentence. I don’t care for that so I unfollowed. Nothing happened. He didn’t email me asking me why. I don’t think he noticed. I’ve had people unfollow me because the get bored or think I’m repetitive or whatever or because I sometimes mention Jesus. Whatever. I’ve found it doesn’t bother me. So…..I wouldn’t worry about unfollowing, moderating your comment sections, blocking your blog from someone in particular seeing. We do what we have to do to be civil and also look after ourselves and our blog. I’m sorry to be wordy. I have never seen anything offensive, uncivil, mean, inappropriate on your blog. You seem to try to keep things positive and upbeat and share your world. I appreciate that. so just do what you do and don’t let other folks bother you. You can’t uncrazy and unmean people…..you can only be responsible for your own actions. And it is okay to unfollow folks.

    1. Thanks hun … wordy indeed … and yes you are correct unfollow happens silently … the only way they would know is is they have very few followers and keep on looking at the list … but usually there’s a reason why the list is so short ! … I don’t mind people talking about Jesus even though I’m not religious, few mentioned on my “most influential person” post a few days ago, I was just polite … the F word I don’t mind, but in moderation, every other word and on every post is unnecessary … Cheers Don

      1. Yeppers. I know fwords happen and that is cool. but like you said…..every other word and every post is gratuitous. I certainly don’t mind or question when people mention Buddha or Mohammed or Higher Spirit. I like that people believe (or not) in something outside of themselves. No need to fuss at me for my beliefs. It’s my blog, after all. Today is sunny over here and full of flowers. I think I’ll post my azaleas for wordless Wednesday. Hope that makes someone smile.

      2. LOL, that’s funny because I believe the Buddha or Holy spirit (or mohammed) exists inside … perhaps outside too … but as I said I’m not religious, and tend to stay out of it, because it’s such a minefield …

Hope your azaleas are beautiful and many people love them 🙂

  16. Curious minds want to know. How do you find out if someone is following you or not. Yes, I have the list of all who follow me. How can you unfollow someone? I am not getting 1+1=2. xx Amy

    1. It’s in your stats in dashboard, just under the number of followers there’s a link that says “blog” … I can’t send you the link, because it’s specific to each individual blog … that lead to another page, that has your followers listed …

      1. Right. I know about that. So where does the unfollow work in? If they are following you, why would you unfollow them? Perhaps the neurons arent’ firing properly today? Hmmmm……I still don’t get it. Sorry, Don.

      2. I don’t unfollow people who are following me, where did I say that ? I thought I said the exact opposite, I always follow people who are following me … it’s those that have unfollowed me that I unfollow …

Coffee I think you need lady !

      3. Don, I don’t know how you do it. Seriously. I have a little over 1600 and trying to keep track is almost impossible some days. It is NOT about all me. No. I go to my friend’s blogs and leave comments. It’s gotten to the point I have in my reader only those I really want in my reader, and then those who come to my blog, I go to their blog. Still not easy. How many fingers DO you have?? OMG! I KNOW how much time I put in! Good grief!! You are a true HERO in my eyes! *faints*

      4. LOL, like my sleep too hun, sounds like you’ve had an exciting time … I’ll try to get an early night for a change today, been hard at it, need some me time 🙂

  17. Haters gonna hate…just my suggestion, do what you do (nature photos, humor, opinions etc.) best and don’t even give this fool any more play. I could be wrong, but I suspect they could be just soaking it in, why give them the satisfaction?

    1. For sure Jen, I get that … just wanted to make it clear, so there’s no misunderstanding, and also useful to get others opinions … I’ve had replies on other social networks too, one guy gave me a “right on Don” on linkedin … so I think others probably just as pissed off with these petty weirdos, vocalising it help me and others 🙂

      1. The older I get, the more frequent it happens. I tried Dragon once, but I spent so much time going back to correct capitalization and punctuation that it wasn’t worth it.

      2. LOL … whoosh … the dragon thing went straight over my head …

And I guess another reason to be polite, if one occasionally hits send prior to engaging facilities …

Don’t worry, I get all sorts, sometimes incoherent ramblings that were obviously mean’t for someone else … usually I just send a smiley face back if I didn’t understand !

  18. There seems to be a bit of pettiness and cattiness that goes on out in WordPresslandia. I figure that if I don’t like something just move on, or unfollow, or whatever, but no need to advertise; just do what you need to do.

  19. I must say that you’re handling it well. For some, I guess it’s all a numbers game. I’ve built up some decent author to author relationships through my blog. Including beta reads and reviews.
Everything is better when its done the right way.
P.S. can you post a link to “Do Journalists Tell the Truth?” I’ve been searching through your archives and can’t seem to find it. I need to mention and link it in a forthcoming post.

  20. Well, well, well… This is an interesting one. Well, I find your blog interesting, so it is unlikely that I will “unfollow” you any time in the near future!

  21. [ Smiles ] My goodness. It is not every day that I come across a blog requesting people to unfollow them.

People unfollow me all the time (I don’t know their reasons for it) and it is okay.

Hey, I have no intentions of unfollowing you! I like your blog!
