DonCharisma.org Wordpress Suspended

Don Charisma leaving WordPress.com

Only kidding I don’t quit that easily, but the thought did cross my mind. I am however more than a bit cheezed off with having had my blog suspended for 24 hours.

Also apologies to anyone who has tried to visit during this period.

I’ve spent the best part of the last six months building up my blog, working long hours quite often. So no, I’m not a spammer, never have been, never will be.

Reason behind the suspension, I tried to use the import function in my dashboard, to upload a single post via an xml file. Appears that it got flagged by WordPress’ anti-spam controls.

It’s good that they’ve got these controls in place, as I’ve seen some of the crap websites that have been put up in the past by these spam-artists. BUT for genuine bloggers, it’s a damn nuisance, annoying and frustrating.

This is the email I received back finally from WordPress support :

Hi there,

Thank you for getting in touch. Your site was flagged by our automated anti-spam controls. We have reviewed your site and have removed the suspension notice.

Please be sure to clear your browser’s cache and, if necessary, restart the browser.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clear-your-cache-and-cookies

We greatly apologize for this error and any inconvenience it may have caused.

Generally I’ve found WordPress works very well, support is pretty good. I even gave Matt an award earlier this year.

But in this instance I do feel very let down. If the import function doesn’t work, then really it ought to be removed or at least a warning next to it along the lines – “Please note that if you upload here your blog may get suspended by our anti-spam mechanism, upload at your own risk”.

I’m always very busy and therefore looking for ways to save time, whilst still producing interesting and varied content for my blog. So I will ask WordPress support how I can do this without being suspended again.

Warm regards

Don Charisma

UPDATE

I’ve spoken to one of the guys in support who’s been very helpful and looks like we’re making some progress as to achieving what I was trying to do. Thankyou WordPress support, your help is appreciated.

  1. YIKES! Don’t do that to me again, I saw that title in my reader and had a moment of panic, I just started reading your blog and didn’t want to see it go. Whew! It’s funny, just yesterday I was checking out the export option, I was going to create a test blog so I could see what it looked like with a different theme and play around with the options they had. But found out I would have to load it onto my computer first and I don’t have the kind of computer to do that on 😦 I’m using a Chromebook.

    1. LOL sometimes I play with cheap journalist tricks, so sorry for the scare !

For your theme tryout, I think you can do that on your existing blog without copying it, and then not save the changes if you don’t like it … a “preview” … or you could change it then change back again … depends on how many readers you have might scare them if you keep changing themes !

Anyway I’m here staying for the forseeable

      Warm regards

    1. I saw you setup some other sites, so presumbly you’d have done uploads via xml … did you run into the same kind of problems, or was all plain sailing ? warm regards DC

  2. Good that you followed up and got things fixed pretty quickly. I’ve been with WP for 2 1/2 years now and haven’t had any serious problems, but there will always be quirks and glitches in any system. Hang in there! 😉

    1. I’ve found the support to be awesome, very efficient to resolve problems and very personable. The delay possibly due to backlog from the weekend, and the number of dumb people creating blogs for bullshit purposes. I’ve taken this into account when I wrote this.

The man at support has been very helpful, and it may be possible to do what I was trying to do, hopefully yes, but I am waiting for him to reply at the moment.

      Warm regards

  3. Trial and error. Thanks for going through the headache so I don’t have to.

At some point, if you get enough traffic (I’ve heard 1,000 per day) you might want to self-host and keep the WP platform, but move it over to the server of your choice.

    1. Hey, yes trial and error, and it’s been a useful experience. I’ve started a dialog with support, and generally they are helpful, so hopefully that’ll yield a result…

I already have self-hosted, but decided to stay on wp.com because of the reader integration, which one doesn’t get on wp.org blogs.

I think I’d stay with wp.com blog until there’s a commercial reason for not being hosted, offers of advertising etc. Also want to see how the wordads is going to pan out, as I haven’t actually had any earning reports yet.

      Warm regards

  4. Welcome back. Have you thought of copying and pasting into Word and importing that way? A little slower perhaps but better than being suspended once again. 😉

    1. Thanks …

I’ll have to look at the options, and do some testing on my testing blog first … copying and pasting still a bit slower than I’d like, but may be the only option 🙂

  5. You don’t give up/they don’t give up. Is that one of the rules? Patience is hard to come by in this cyber millenia and probably even as personal as a person-to-person phone conversation. Congrats! You both persevered. WP is a good thing.

    1. Yes you’re right Bob … and customer service counts for a lot, hard to get personal one-to-one, but it always stands out when i do get it, and they are usually the organisations and people I trust. Warm regards DC

  6. I’ve had this happen to me a couple of times. It is frustrating and scary. You’re right– it’s good the controls are in place for the just in case moments, but it can be a little frustrating. I’m glad your blog is back to normal! xx

  7. I bet that scared you–my heart leaps when I can’t log in because I make a typo. You have worked hard, and I am glad things are resolved.
