One ought never to turn one’s back on a threatened danger and try to run away from it. If you do that, you will double the danger. But if you meet it promptly and without flinching, you will reduce the danger by half.

  1. This is exactly the advice I give when I take people out on hikes where there is a likelihood of running into bears. Don’t turn and run, you will just entice them. Stand your ground, raise your arms high to increase your stature, the bear will usually turn and leave, not wanting confrontation. Of course, if it’s a momma looking after her cubs, all bets are off!
