(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman – The Kinks (US 12″ Extended Mix)
And now for something completely different (I’d never heard this before, nothing wrong with trying something new) … A reader of my blog’s request :
“(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman” is a song written by Ray Davies that was first released on the Kinks’ 1979 album, Low Budget. The song, inspired by Superman: The Movie, employs a disco beat and lyrics that describe the singer’s wish to be like the fictional character Superman. The song’s disco style was created as a response to Arista Records founder Clive Davis’s request for “a club-friendly record,” despite Ray Davies’ hatred of disco.
The song was released as the lead single from Low Budget, becoming a moderate hit in North America. It has since appeared on numerous compilation and live albums.

My Sharona – The Knack
Another classic, for Friday :
“My Sharona” is the debut single by the Knack. The song was written by Berton Averre and Doug Fieger, and released in 1979 from their album Get the Knack. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart where it remained for 6 weeks, and was number one on Billboard’s 1979 Top Pop Singles year-end chart.
It was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America, representing half a million copies sold, and was Capitol Records’ fastest gold status debut single since the Beatles’ “I Want to Hold Your Hand” in 1964.

Moving On Up – M People
These things always come in threes 🙂
Moving on Up is the seventh overall single from British band M People, and the second single from their second album, Elegant Slumming (1993). Written by Mike Pickering and Paul Heard and produced by M People, it was released on 13 September 1993.
The song peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart, and was the biggest selling M People single. The song also became a Top 40 hit on the US Billboard Hot 100, and number one on the Billboard dance chart.

One Night In Heaven – M People
On my playlist … fact – only music concert I ever went to was M People in Cardiff … My friend one tickets on the radio, and I provided the transport. I didn’t know I liked them until listening to them live, Heather Small is an amazing vocalist, so I was blown away by her “charisma”.
“One Night in Heaven” is the sixth overall single from British band M People and the first single from their second album Elegant Slumming (1993). Written by Mike Pickering and Paul Heard. Otis or The Commitments ?
“Hard to Handle” is a 1968 song written by American soul star Otis Redding along with Al Bell and Allen Jones. Originally recorded by Redding, it was released in 1968 as the B-side to “Amen” (shortly after the singer’s sudden death in 1967). The song also appears on the 1968 album The Immortal Otis Redding. Redding’s version reached #38 on the Billboard R&B charts and #51 on the pop charts.

Nightshift – The Commodores
A reader of the blog reminded me of this song – Another oldie but classic. Motown, aka these days, Universal Music
“Nightshift” is a 1985 song by the Commodores and the title track from their eleventh album of the same name. The song was written by lead singer Walter Orange in collaboration with Dennis Lambert and Franne Golde, as a loving tribute to soul/R&B singers Jackie Wilson and Marvin Gaye, both of whom died in 1984. The song was released as the album’s first single on January 31, 1985 by Motown Records in the United States.

“Easy” is a song by Commodores for the Motown label, from their fifth studio album, Commodores. Group member Lionel Richie wrote “Easy” with the intention of it becoming another crossover hit for the group given the success of a previous single, “Just to Be Close to You”, which spent two weeks at number one on the US Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart (now known as the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart) and peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1976

One of my favourite “soothing” tunes …
“Lifted” is a song written by British duo Lighthouse Family, for their debut album Ocean Drive (1996). The song was produced by Mike Peden. It was released as the lead single on May 1995 and reached the top 70 in the United Kingdom. In February 1996 the song was re-released, reaching a new peak of number four in the United Kingdom and reaching the top 40 in Austria, Iceland and Ireland, as well as on the Canadian RPM Adult Contemporary chart

Another oldie but classic, by Antoine “Fats” Domino Jr. .
Two versions, second is live – a good live performance.
“Blue Monday” is a song originally, written by Dave Bartholomew, first recorded in 1953 by Smiley Lewis and issued as a single, in January 1954, on Imperial Records (catalog # 5268). The single, with a slow-rocking beat, features an instrumental electric guitar solo by Lewis.
It was later popularized in a recording by Fats Domino in 1956, also on Imperial (catalog # 5417), on which the songwriting credit was shared between him and Bartholomew. Most later versions have credited Bartholomew and Domino as co-writers. The baritone saxophone solo is by Herbert Hardesty.

No Woman, No Cry – Bob Marley And The Wailers
Classic Bob Marley. Couldn’t decide which version I prefer, so I posted both (second one is 12″ extended about 12 minutes). …. But, on balance I prefer the second version.
“No Woman, No Cry” is a reggae song by Bob Marley and the Wailers. The song first became known in 1974 from the studio album Natty Dread. This studio version used a drum machine. The live version from the 1975 album Live! was released as a single and is the best known version; it was included on the greatest hits compilation Legend, and was recorded at the Lyceum Theatre in London on July 17, 1975 as part of his Natty Dread Tour.

Sex Machine 12″ – James Brown
Or more correctly – “Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine”. Another oldie but classic. Video has been cleverly cut to match the audio, props to the video maker !
“Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine” is a song recorded by James Brown with Bobby Byrd on backing vocals. Released as a two-part single in 1970, it was a no. 2 R&B hit and reached no. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone – The Temptations
Another oldie but classic. I think it’s an official release by Motown aka Universal Music
“Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” is a song performed by Motown recording act the Undisputed Truth. It was written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong in 1971, and released as a single in May 1972. It peaked at number 63 on the Pop Charts and number 24 on the R&B Charts. The song was included on the Undisputed Truth’s album Law of the Land (1973).
Later that year, Whitfield, who also produced the song, took “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” and remade it as a 12-minute record for the Temptations, which was a number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and won three Grammy Awards in 1973. While the original Undisputed Truth version of the song has been largely forgotten, the Temptations’ version of the song has been an enduring and influential soul classic. It was ranked number 169 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, one of the group’s three songs on the list. In retrospect, the Temptations’ Otis Williams considers “Papa” to be the last real classic the group recorded (it would be the Temptations’ last number one hit and would win them their second and final Grammy Award in a competitive category).

Another oldie but classic. It’s a live version, but a really nice live version, with video of band playing.
“Green Onions” is an instrumental composition recorded in 1962 by Booker T. & the M.G.’s. Described as “one of the most popular instrumental rock and soul songs ever”.
Twenty Five Miles – Edwin Starr
Absolutely one of my favourite tunes of all time, in my top 5. Another oldie but classic.
I couldn’t decide which video had the best audio quality, but I think the second one – let me know in the comments which you prefer.

Dancing in the Street – Martha Reeves and the Vandellas
Another oldie but classic’ie, and one of my favourites. From an era where people were actually creative, and actually made really good music. Rather than bland reboots, rehashes, remixes and remakes (sorry, rant over).
This was the best video I could find, video and audio wise.

Born To Be Wild – Steppenwolf (+Photos !)
(Experimental)
After some hours of trying to make a still photo slideshow with ffmpeg, I gave up. Some of the features are missing on the Windows version, would probably have been easier using Linux.
So I used the inbuilt video editor in Windows 10 to take a bunch of still photos, add music courtesy Steppenwolf. Then finally added my watermark of DonCharisma.org with ffmpeg.
So, long story short – it’s some photos I took, with music 🙂 Experimenting with a different format for presenting my photos – rather than a long page of photos.
