The UK Adopts Powers To Enforce Coronavirus Quarantine

I just heard about this on LBC, Nigel Farage show (which is currently broadcasting live on YouTube). Seems USA is adopting similar powers too. Basically they can detain/quarantine you (by force if necessary) if they suspect you have coronavirus (probably a good thing all things considered).

Here’s FT’s take on it :

The UK adopts powers to enforce coronavirus quarantine

Mandatory isolation to apply in England as four more patients test positive

The UK government has declared the coronavirus outbreak “a serious and imminent threat to public health” and announced new powers that will allow the health secretary to force people in England into mandatory isolation if they are at risk of spreading the disease.

The announcement came as England’s chief medical officer, Professor Chris Whitty, said that four more patients had tested positive for coronavirus in England, bringing the total number of cases in the UK to eight.

In a statement on Monday that significantly ratchets up measures to stop Britons catching the illness, the Department of Health and Social Care said: “In light of the recent public health emergency from the novel coronavirus originating from Wuhan, the secretary of state has made regulations to ensure that the public are protected as far as possible from the transmission of the virus.”

The department added that the “incidence or transmission” of coronavirus was now deemed to constitute “a serious and imminent threat” and the measures outlined were “considered as an effective means of delaying or preventing further transmission of the virus”.

The new regulations only apply to England. Arrowe Park Hospital on the Wirral and Kents Hill Park conference centre in Milton Keynes have been designated as “isolation” facilities.

According to the PA news agency, one of those in quarantine at Arrowe Park was “threatening to abscond” from the isolation unit, despite signing a contract agreeing to a 14-day quarantine period after returning from Wuhan.

Prof Whitty said that the four new cases “are all known contacts of a previously confirmed UK case, and the virus was passed on in France”. He added that the patients had been transferred to specialist units and the Royal Free and Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals in London.

“Experts at Public Health England continue to work hard tracing patient contacts from the UK cases. They successfully identified these individuals and ensured the appropriate support was provided,” said Prof Whitty.

The health department said the nation’s infection control procedures were “world-leading” and the National Health Service was well prepared to deal with novel coronavirus.

“We are strengthening our regulations so we can keep individuals in supported isolation for their own safety and if public health professionals consider they may be at risk of spreading the virus to other members of the public,” it said.

“The measure would “make it easier for health professionals to help keep people safe across the country”, it added.
