Facebook Good ? Facebook Bad ? Free Speech ? Or Totalitarian Censorship ?

TBH, I’ve never been a Facebook fan. Having spoken to others, it’s a mixed bag, some like it, some don’t. Most say they just use it to keep in touch with friends and family, and others, actively avoid using it. For some it’s a news source. They also own Instagram, which a lot of photographers use.

Zuckerberg – the jury is out on him, I don’t know if I like him or not, never met him either. He does kinda act like a robot, but that’s not necessarily a reason to dismiss someone – after all “diversity is our strength”, and cyborgs should be included in that, should they not.

An interesting couple of videos popped up on my YouTube feed from Carl Benjamin on the topics of Facebook, Zuckerberg and Soros.

The first video – I think is one of the best things I’ve heard about Facebook in a long time – “Mark Zuckerberg Backs Free Speech on Facebook”. Not much else needed to be said on that, good on Mark Zuckerberg. Well done.

The second video – is more worrying. A discussion of an opinion piece written by Oligarch George Soros (published in New York Times), slating Facebook, accusing them of allowing his political opponents to speak on their platform (how dare they !). Strangely surreal really coming from a totalitarianist, complaining about his opponent, (ie the orange man), of being able to freely speak on the Facebook platform, and that being any kind of a problem. I can’t fathom the argument, there’s no substance or basis in reality in it.

Are we then to assume that there’s only one side that should be allowed to speak, the other should be silenced by any means. Is this what democracy and free speech means to George Soros ? If so, I’m worried, very worried – free speech is something worth fighting for, and, censorship and totalitarianism against.

And – calling for the cancelling of Mark Zuckerberg, when he doesn’t actually appear to have done anything wrong (from what I could make out from Soros), kinda reminiscent of people I’ve heard of falling foul of cancel culture.

I think my favourite part (that Carl pointed out) is that Mark Zuckerberg is said to be worth around $70 billion, and George Soros “only” $8 billion. Given that – Soros tries to smear Zuckerberg, by saying he’s only interested in money. Kinda seems like that might be the other way round based on the numbers, just saying.

Anyway, here’s Carl’s submissions on YouTube “Akkad Daily” today/yesterday :

Lastly – I AM JUST PASSING THIS ON – I am not a journalist or activist and TBH most of the time not a “serious” writer either (blogging is supposed to be fun?). I’m a centrist, I read and view content from both sides of the aisle (as long as it’s not blatant propaganda, or utter trash) – so I’m sharing this for your information, something you may not be aware of and may be interested in (or not, in which case, just go to the next post). As with any news or report, don’t just take it at face value, do your own research, use your own critical thinking. Kind of obvious really, but best stated, so that it’s clear.
