Nobody really cares if you’re miserable, so you might as well be happy.

  1. Dismissive privileged ablist. As if seratonin imbalance, depression, anxiety disorder, etc. are predicated on whether other people “care” about it or not (unless we’re referring to treatment). So she married an author and spends her time churning out hotel-lobby-safe artwork in the midwest, and thinks she has the right to tell people “you might as well be happy” as if emotion can be flicked on and off like a light switch. In my groups I listen to the stories of plenty of people struggling with mental illness, poverty, and other hardships, and you think they don’t WANT to be happier? That’s what they’re working at, and she’s so breezy about it. Mediocre artist monster.

(P.S. Don she’s not a friend of yours on her is she? I kind of hope she sees this.)

    1. I’d also like to add that given the number of volunteers, social workers working in the lower class and indigent sectors, mental health advocates and activists, and other dedicated and caring individuals who are not as callous and sociopathic-sounding as Cynthia Nelms, she’s incorrect as well as mean. There are people who DO care if others are miserable. And want to help. Unlike her.

      1. Wow, Jenny, what can I say to that ?

For me it’s quite a lot simpler, insofar that looking around for sympathy probably isn’t a path to happiness … I understand the factors and challenges intimately in myself through my own experience, but personally still feel happiness is a choice, as I think I’ve expressed already …

Depression, unhappiness and any other kind of suffering is something human beings experience, it’s normal, ordinary … someone said pain is inevitable, suffering is optional … Buddha I think …

Of course people aren’t indestructible, unlimited or “perfect”, we all have times when we need support, care and help … that’s also normal and ordinary … and of course praise to ordinary Angels …

She’s not a personal friend of mine, but I’m SURE she reads my blog, so she’ll definitely have read your comments Jenny 😀
