Litany against fear – Fear is the mind killer

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain

Bene Gesserit – Litany Against Fear (Frank Herbert’s – Dune 1965)

  1. I tagged this on the back of the Berlin Wall. The back of the east side gallery is bleached white to show the east side’s view so I put it there- where their ghosts might see.

  2. Thanks for the follow. I love that scene in Dune! Fear is the mind killer, true words indeed. 🙂

      1. I don’t know if you are into science fiction, but if you haven’t read Dune by Frank Herbert you really should. It’s a riveting, can’t put it down read that really makes you think. It also has lots of great quotes. Probably one of my favorite books of all time.

      2. HEy there, i do like sci-fi, but I’ve always been more of a film watcher, perhaps I’m a little dyslexic ? Frank Herbert been recommended so I might give it a go when I get some time 🙂

  3. I’m also a fan of both the Litany and Frank Herbert, having read nearly everything he published in book form. The city of Tacoma, where he grew up, is currently considering naming a section of its waterfront park after him, in honor of both his great success as a writer and his very early and deep understanding of systems and devotion to matters of ecology. Thanks for sharing the Litany! And for following my blog!

    1. Hi Terry, Thanks for stopping by, and giving me a bit more info on Frank Herbert, I didn’t realise how much of a popular author he is !

The Litany against fear spoke to me in a time of need and the Dune film are how I know his work, at the moment.

I’ve visited your site and left a comment there, you’re also on my links->friends …

    1. It’d been made into a film by the time I experienced it, was a big thing at the time, although through all the advances in technology it’s a little dated … came across this when I needed some inspiration, very helpful quote 🙂

      1. Dated? Perhaps. Some would call the film steampunk. Nevertheless, the quote is a favourite of mine.

        Thanks for the follow…

      2. What I mean is Tron vs Tron Legacy, computers have changed the way films are made… don’t get me wrong Dune is/was a great film, perhaps “Dune Legacy” will be along before long ?

Also a favourite of mine, helped me in my life at a time I needed it most, thanks Frank!

My pleasure on the follow, will stop by your blog see how you’re getting on 🙂

    1. Hi Yusef, it’s a great quote isn’t it, I found it on a forum on a day I was in need of some inspiration … I’ve seen the movie dune but not had a chance to read Frank Herbert, maybe I get time one of these days …

  5. I’ve always loved the litany of fear. I have committed it to memory and tried to teach my daughter it, but I have to say, it doesn’t usually come to mind when I’m frightened!
